#DoneWithSilence: About the Campaign

Recently, #DoneWithSilence was launched on the Choma platform. #DoneWithSilence is all about starting conversations and making your voice heard about any change you want to see, from change in your community, change at school or work, to any type of  change you’d like to see around the world.

For instance, the first campaign on #DoneWithSilence is about gender inequality, and it’s basically about refusing to be silent about gender inequality.

Why should you join the conversation?

By joining the #DoneWithSilence campaign, you’re joining many other voices who are simply saying that they are against the many societal injustices that are happening in this country, and the rest of the world. By being part of the #DoneWithSilence campaign, you’re helping me, and other Chomas make as much noise as we can to influence the change we want to see in our communities, and the world in general.

The more we speak out against about things like gender-based violence, gender inequality, discrimination, bullying or harassment, the more we encourage ourselves and those around us not to just be bystanders but to actively fight it.

Being part of the #DoneWithSilence campaign is saying “no more will I be silent about my own abuse or the abuse of others”. It is also saying “I pledge not to be violent towards women and children” and “I refuse to be part of the problem by staying silent when I witness violence”.

How do I become part of the campaign?

By simply creating a post with your message on your social platform of choice and include the hashtag #DoneWithSilence.

Click on this link to create your campaign message and view other users messages.

Add a title to your campaign message, such as “I am against violence”

Then eloborate in your message for example: “ Violence against women and children is unacceptable. I refuse to be a part of it by keeping quiet.” Add the #DoneWithSilence hashtag and click send.

Your voice counts towards a bigger conversation around violence. By simply taking a stand, you already contribute to the ongoing fight against it. Absolutely no one should be a victim of violence and we should all play our part towards creating a society that is free of violence and abuse.

FAQs

You might have a few questions about adding your name to the campaign, these answers might put you at ease.

Will my story be public?

Yes it will. Your story will go onto the #DoneWithSilence platform and anyone who comes on the platform will be able to view it. The reason why stories are public is because we need to be able to show stories that will encourage victims of violence and discourage people to become perpetrators of violence. The more others see your story, the more they will be encourage to share their own.

Will my story by shared?

It might be. All posts on the #DoneWithSilence social wall can be shared. The reason for this is so that the message can be spread and more people can be encouraged to join the conversation. People can also like your story by up-voting it.

Do I have to share a personal story?

Not at all. You could simply share a post saying “I am against violence against women and children” and add the hashtag #DoneWithSilence. That’s all Choma. Although the campaign encourages people not to be silent, it doesn’t mean that you have to share your own personal experiences. If you do decide to, you don’t even have to use your real name.

What if I want to speak about it but I’m not ready for it to be public?

There are spaces online where you can speak to someone privately about your situation – including right here on Choma. By clicking on Ask Choma, you can start a private conversation with me where I could offer you advice or simply be an ear if you just want to talk.

Whether you’re a victim or you are somehow affected by a social ill, you’re not obligated to speak about your personal experience in public but it is important that you get help.

Remember, you can send me a message to talk to me about anything. So if you or a friend need advice or help, you can contact me here on Ask Choma, send me a Facebook Message, a Twitter DM, or a WhatsApp Message (071 172 3657).
