4 ways to celebrate Freedom Day

Freedom Day reminds us of our rich history and how fortunate we are to live freely in South Africa. The day commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held in 1994. Refreshing your knowledge on South Africa’s roots not only reminds us of the history and our past, but also allows us to celebrate just how far we’ve come as a nation. Here are 4 ways you could celebrate Freedom Day this year

Travel local

There are many local historic places that you can visit. This includes Robben Island, the Apartheid Museum, Vilakazi Street in Soweto, the Union Buildings as well as the Nelson Mandela capture site sculpture in KwaZulu-Natal. These sites will be sure to give you deep insights into our history and the sacrifices that has rewarded us with freedom.


You could make a difference by volunteering at a community project or movement for a day. The nice thing about volunteering is that it helps develop skills which you may need later in life. It is a great addition to your CV and may even increase your chances of being employed. Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence and self-esteem while doing good for others as it provides a sense of accomplishment.

Spend time with family and friends

You can explore the botanical gardens, public parks as well beaches with family and friends. Use this time to enjoy the holiday and what this day symbolises. Remember to practice COVID-19 protocols when going out in public by keeping a social distance and wearing your mask at all times.

Use social media to celebrate

You can use your social media platforms to raise awareness about what Freedom Day means to you, 27 years later. You can also share your plans to volunteer with friends and family online and invite them to help. The more hands the better. 

We may have spent last year’s Freedom Day confined to our households due to the COVID-19 lockdown but this year is a fresh opportunity to explore our country and it’s history. Just remember to be safe by practicing social distancing and wearing your mask when out in public.
