Choma Queens: Making SA Proud

Choma, there are many talented local actresses, musicians and models in our country who work hard and go above and beyond in everything they do. Here are 5 of the most inspirational proudly South African queens who have shined on the international stage.

Terry Pheto

Choma, you probably know the iconic Terry Pheto best for her leading role as Miriam in the 2005 Oscar-winning film Tsotsi. But did you know that in 2016, she signed with one of the best Hollywood talent agencies?

In 2008, she appeared in magazines like Vanity Fair and Cosmopolitan as the face of L’Oreal. She has also starred in several international films, including the 2013 film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Terry has now signed to an agency called Paradigm, joining A-list celebrities such as Janelle Monae, Ed Sheeran and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Quote: “One thing I learned from a very young age is to be humble and always respectful. These are the principles my mother and grandmother taught me, and they were right because people can see through you. Working hard and everything else just adds to that”.

The soulful Lira is a multiplatinum selling singer and songwriter. She was born in Daveyton in Joburg’s East Rand in 1979. Lira recently joined the global list of iconic JoyWalkers for the Johnnie Walker brand, in addition to becoming the face of Bobbi Brown’s South African campaign in 2016. She speaks four languages, and although she has achieved international fame, she never forgets her roots.

Boitumelo Thulo

Boitumelo Thulo “Boity” is an actress, TV presenter and entrepreneur. You may know her from her role as Mpho Bogatsu on Mzansi Magic’s Rockville, from her presenting on Club 808, or maybe you’re one of her 1.9 million followers on Instagram. Her love for fitness led to the creation of “Human Limitless”- her own pharmaceutical company which offers her personal weight loss supplement called “Boity Toning Support”.

In addition to her local success, Boity is a brand ambassador for USN and was named one of FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World in 2012.

Nandi Mngoma

Did you catch KZN-born actress and singer Nandi Mngoma at the BET Awards in 2016? The beautiful gown she wore to the event was yet another one of this fashionista’s outfits to catch international attention. Nandi has been featured in many overseas magazines and TV channels such as Elle US and E! Entertainment. In 2017, she landed her first radio gig with The Coke Studio Radio Hour in Hollywood, California.

Quote: “My look was very African, and I wasn’t willing to change”.

Ayanda Thabethe

Stunning model, actress, TV host and entrepreneur Ayanda Thabethe was announced as the new Global Ambassador for Mizani (L’Oréal’s Professional hair care brand) late last year, appearing on billboards and posters in the USA as well as in many African countries.

Ayanda’s keen business sense and her education in Communication Management and Marketing have no doubt played a role in her success. Her hard work and dedication to learning are incredibly inspiring.
