Creative careers you didnt know about Part 1

Everyone is into different kinds of things when it comes to career choices, because we all have different talents. Some people are great at traditional STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, etc.) while others are better in creative fields. But have you ever felt that being a creative means that you won’t be able to actually have a career that can lead you to being successful? I understand this frustration, Choma, so this article is to help you realise that you can turn your passion into your profession!

Creative Director

Work description:

A creative director is the person in a company who leads a team according to their creative ideas for a certain project. For example, if an advert needs to be created, the Creative Director will be in charge of assigning roles and responsibilities to the team, and overseeing the progress to make sure that the work matches the end goal, creatively.

Education and skills needed:

  • A bachelors degree in a creative field (like graphic design, branding etc.)
  • Work experience (most creative directors start out in the advertising field as writers or designers)
  • Management skills
  • Decision making skills
  • Able to work well with a team

Graphic Designer

Work Description:

A graphic designer is someone who creates images and drawings using computer applications. Usually they work on creating logos, website designs, images for social media and so much more. Education and skills needed:

  • Bachelors degree in graphic design, web design or visual arts.
  • A good portfolio (you can create this overtime by doing personal work or through work experience).
  • Be able to work on certain design programmes like Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator
  • Know print, photography and branding design

Art Curator

Work Description:

An art curator is a person at an art gallery or museum who is responsible for choosing which artworks will be shown on display for an art exhibition. They are also responsible for arranging the artwork and taking care of it to make sure it stays in good condition. This means that they work very closely with the visual artists who are putting their work out there.

Education & skills needed:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in visual arts or art history
  • Business and management experience/knowledge

Remember that a creative career doesn’t mean that the work is going to be very easy or always come naturally, so just like with any other kind of career path you’re interested in, it’s always best to do some research into what the work would involve so you can set yourself up for success, because it is possible Choma.
