Love stories of any kind are amazing – I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of romance? But the best love stories are the ones that are real, diverse and show us the side of love we don’t normally see in the movies. In this article I’m celebrating ‘queer love’ – love stories that focus on LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex or Asexual) romance. So here are a few films featuring LGBTQIA love that are worth the watch.
Moonlight
Moonlight was one of the best movies of 2017. It even won best picture at last year’s Oscars. It’s more of a ‘coming-of-age’ story than it is a love story Choma but it does touch on the love story between a young man and his childhood friend. The movie tells the story about a boy becoming a man’. It’s a beautiful movie and definitely worth the watch.
Pariah
Pariah is a movie about 17-year-old Alike, who is a young woman coming to terms with her identity as a lesbian women. The movie is also more about her journey of self-discovery as she learns to accept herself while dealing with the difficulties of love that we all go through.
Pearl of Africa
Pearl of Africa is a documentary film about a 28 year-old transgender woman from Uganda named Cleopatra Kambugu. The documentary follows her journey as she transitions into the woman she is while also fighting for her right to love.
Inxeba (The Wound)
It’s a powerful story about Xolani, a factory worker, who travels to the rural mountains in Eastern Cape to help initiate some teen boys into manhood as part of a sacred Xhosa tradition. This film deals with the complexities of sexual identity, masculinity, as well as cultural beliefs.
