Choma queens – 4 inspiring silence breakers

I am always inspired by women who work hard to end social injustices because there is always so much that we can learn from them. That’s why I’ve highlighted 4 women who inspire all of us to do more through their activism.

Charlize Theron

As a supporter of animal rights, Charlize has appeared in anti-fur campaigns for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Her charity organisation, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, is committed to reducing sexual violence and the prevalence of HIV and AIDS among youth in South Africa. She was appointed UN Messenger of Peace in 2008, recognising and assisting her efforts to end violence against women.

Jo-Ann Strauss

The former Miss South Africa, media personality and entrepreneur has been a UNICEF South Africa Celebrity Advocate since 2015 and was named National Ambassador in 2016. She works to raise awareness about children’s rights. She’s been an MC at the annual Westin Ball, a fundraising event for UNICEF South Africa. Additionally, a clothing range she designed raised funds to feed over 8 000 families.

Nomzamo Mbatha

Nomzamo is an actress and advocate for issues like female empowerment and mental health. As a UN Refugee Agency High Profile Supporter, she’s visited refugees in Kenya and launched a fundraising drive for the UN Refugee Agency’s LuQuLuQu campaign to support displaced (homeless) African people. Nomzamo uses her platform and influence to make a lasting difference in communities all over Africa.

Gigi White

A finalist in the Woman of Stature Awards 2019, Gigi is the founder of ‘Get Up Woman’, a company that’s been started to uplift middle class South African women of all ages and races. She also supports victims of abuse by offering them the help they need to be able to stand on their own and continue with their lives by assisting them with clothing and other essentials, as well as supporting them in the process of getting justice. With the help of other women, she is breaking the cycle of Gender-based violence by talking about it and offering victims a safe space to get the help they need.

These women are proof that we can all make a difference by standing up for something that we care about. You can effect positive change in your community and make the world better, Choma. A good place to start is being a part of my #DoneWithSilence campaign.
