Choma, in the fight for an HIV-free generation, access to quality education is one of the most important tools that can be given to young people, and especially girls.

Issues like lack of access to sanitary pads for girls, lack of opportunities and funding for secondary and tertiary studies, as well as households where young girls are pressured to stay home to take care of younger siblings, are only some of the barriers that keep young girls out of school. 

Access to basic education is one of our human rights in South Africa, but quality education can really influence the kind of healthy decisions you should make that can help us reach our goal of an HIV free generation. Here’s how Choma:

Why we need more girls in school

When girls are given the opportunity to go to school, most of the time, they’re more informed in subjects about their bodies and health, and are more likely to know how to protect themselves.

Education empowers young women to make healthy lifestyle choices, follow their dreams and become the future leaders.

How we can keep more girls in school

Mentorships

A mentorship is when someone (the mentor) who is usually more experienced in a specific field, helps you (the mentee) through your own journey in the same field by offering you focussed guidance. Mentorship is a great way to empower young women to reach their dreams. Most of the time, mentorship gives them a positive role model to learn a lot from.

Learning support

The Choma Dreams Cafe offers young girls a safe space to come together and access to the internet and resources to learn more about HIV prevention

Taking action can be as simple as expressing your feelings and what you think can be done to get more girls in school. After all, social media is one of the best ways to spread an idea about something and to stand up for change.

Yes, it will take some time Choma, but in the long run, any action today, no matter how small, can lead to change around the world for a better tomorrow.
